PlaceMatters is a non-profit organization that works with our partners to create and maintain sustainable and vibrant communities by improving decision-making processes. We work across the United States—currently our projects range from Hawaii to Albany, NY—to bring more people to decision processes, and ensure that their decisions are based upon robust local information and models.

PlaceMatters 2012 Internship Program
PlaceMatters is seeking up to two stellar interns for the summer of 2012. Internships are available under our three core group areas: the Sustainable Solutions Group, the PlaceMatters Institute, and the Decision Lab. More information on each is below. Both internships include a stipend and transit pass.
Sustainable Solutions Group/PlaceMatters Institute Internship
The Sustainable Solutions Group manages PlaceMatters' on the ground projects, working with communities, regions, and organizations to improve decision-making processes. The PlaceMatters Institute communicates info about tools and techniques to help the field stay on top of key developments, and foster hybridization and cross-disciplinary work.
The Sustainable Solutions Group and the PlaceMatters Institute are looking for an intern with project management experience and course work in community planning or sustainability to assist with our on-the-ground projects and communications. This position will be tailored to fit an exceptional candidate’s interests, but will focus on:
- Project management
- Proposal writing
- Project evaluation
- Some day-to-day office logistics
- Public meeting set-up, facilitation, and coordination
- Communication of planning and sustainability information and principles
Candidates should have experience in or knowledge of community decision-making and/or sustainability principles, be well organized, have good public speaking and written communication skills, and have an interest in improving community decision making. Decision Lab Internship
The Decision Lab is PlaceMatters' inside-out R & D lab. We are building a community of tinkerers, hackers, designers, coders, and practitioners dedicated to building the next generation of tools and techniques for better decision-making around planning and sustainability.
An intern chosen for the Decision Lab at PlaceMatters will need a technical skillset as well as an interest in planning, sustainability or related field. While deep knowledge of planning issues is not required, some knowledge of planning issues and civic decision-making is preferred. Technical aptitude in one form or another is required, but we have a wide range of technical needs, which include:
- Geographic Information Systems and Scenario Planning tools, preferably CommunityViz
- Website development including:
- PHP programming OR
- Database development OR
- User experience and graphic design OR
- Javascript and frontend interaction OR
- Drupal programming
- Hardware hacking and engineering (DIY innovator)
- Mobile platform development (iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.)
We are looking for someone that demonstrates excellence in at least one of the areas listed above. We are not expecting knowledge in all of these areas. The best applicants will bring their best ideas to PlaceMatters and will be proactive in figuring out ways to use their skills to build better tools for decision-making. If you’re self- motivated and love problem solving, we have some great challenges for you to tackle this summer!
